Paris is burning

Amazing documentary by Jennie Livingston. Released in 1990, the film captures the end of the “Golden Age” of NYC drag balls, and uses the backdrop of the ball culture of NYC to examine issues of race, class and gender. Both poignant and wildly entertaining/fascinating, it is definitely worth checking out.

After reading this interview with the artist Heather Cassils (who has received notoriety for being the prison guard/paramour in Lady Gaga’s video Telephone) , it became clear to me how twenty-or-so years later, these topics are still so relevant:
